"Islands" Writing Workshop and Reading

BHML will host a writers workshop with authors Lynne Barrett and Weslea Sidon on the morning of Friday, July 25 from 9:30am to noon. The workshop is for anyone wanting to write fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction. Using the overall theme of “Islands,” the workshop will draw upon topics including history, memory, myth, nature, community, isolation, boundaries, and journeys. Ms. Barrett and Ms. Sidon will offer examples and exercises, discuss approaches to generating and developing written work, and provide information about resources for submitting work for publication.

That evening, July 25 at 7pm, the authors will return to read from their fiction. Lynne Barrett’s most recent book of short stories, Magpies, won the Florida Book Award for fiction. She has received the Edgar Award for best mystery story and her recent work can be found in Fort Lauderdale Magazine,Trouble in the Heartland: Stories Inspired by the Songs of Bruce Springsteen,Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Delta Blues, Miami Noir, and One Year to a Writing Life. She teaches in the MFA program at Florida International University in Miami, FL, and for the past twenty years has spent summers on Mount Desert Island with her family.


Weslea Sidon’s poetry collection The Fool Sings has just been published by Rain Chain Press. Her work has appeared in ConfrontationsSalonikaGulf Stream MagazineThe New York Times Metropolitan Diary, XanaduStill On the Island, and Paumanok, among other journals and anthologies. A recipient of a Martin Dibner Fellowship in Poetry, she is long-time instructor of writing and music at Summer Festival of the Arts and lives on Mount Desert Island with her husband.
