New book shares stories of MDI boatbuilders
Over the course of a year, Bass Harbor writer Laurie Schreiber interviewed children and grandchildren of early- to mid-20th century Mount Desert Island boatbuilders of note, including Lennox “Bink” Sargent, Sim Davis, Chester Clement, brothers Frank, Ulysses, Chauncey, Roy, and Pearl Rich, partners Raymond Bunker and Ralph Ellis, Henry Hinckley, Cliff Rich and his sons Ronald, Roger, and Bobby Rich, and Farnham Butler. She also talked at length with boatbuilders Chummy Rich and Rich Helmke, Ralph Stanley and Richard Stanley, Steve Spurling, Hank Hinckley, Jarvis Newman, and others; and she dug into previous recorded interviews and old photos and documents dating back a century and made available by families, historical societies, and libraries.
Schreiber evokes the tales of these builders within the context of family and community and the good humor of pithy quotes, in her new book, Boatbuilders on Mount Desert Island.
Schreiber will share the tale of her rambles from boat shops to kitchen tables to archives, with a slide presentation of old photos that go beyond those included in the book. The presentation is scheduled for May 5, 6:30 p.m., at the Bass Harbor Memorial Library.
Books will be available for sale, for $20 by cash or check.
